DFI Session 3 - Google Earth/Youtubing: Did some exploring of Google earth and had the virtual opportunity to travel to the Pacific Islands and Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. It was great to see aerial shots of different areas and for the students to see where their parents are from. Students were able to explore around their chosen country finding out interesting facts - With the Rugby World Cup coming up I will definitely be using Google earth to do mini inquiries about playing countries and interesting facts. Next on the agenda for my homework is creating my own youtube chanel 😄 this will be fun!!
Hi Gaewyn,
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Google Earth with my class yet? I think it would be a fantastic opportunity for the students to explore countries outside New Zealand. The Rugby World Cup study would be the perfect opportunity to build students knowledge and understandings of other countries. Wouldn't Google Earth be wonderful when we have the Olympics or Commonwealth Games are on. An idea I would like to explore is for the students to show the class exactly where their home land is (where their parents / family are from). It would be great to use at the start of the year. It would help to build relationships and to develop a deeper understanding around where our learners are from.
Good luck with using Google Earth with your class when the Rugby World Cup is on.
Kind regards,
Joy
Hey Joy, thank you for coming through and commenting. Your right this would be great to start the year off with introductions and building those relationships. The exploring of Google Earth is endless and being able to virtual travel with out costing a thing is an added bonus and as you mentioned our learners have a awesome tool here to utilise this tool for the likes of the Rugby World Cup and as you mentioned Olympics etc.
ReplyDeleteHappy exploring with Coconet Tv by the way and just a note to self its a site that suits a range of audiences :) Let me know what you think of it or not hahahaha. Enjoy the last week of term and a well deserved 2 week R & R break.
Hi Gaewyn, Every time I come to a DFI course and someone talks about Google Earth I am like ...Doh that's right you need to include this into your programme... You have reminded me again, especially with the RWC, which we are doing a lot of work on with our students as well. It would be great to add this into their task board. We also have cultures from many different places and giving them an activity around this would engage them fully I believe. Excellent for the beginning of the year as Joy said.
